Description

Blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus, cardo santo, centaurea benedicta, folia cardui benedicti, holy thistle) belongs to the Asteraceae plant family. Blessed thistle is high in iron and has been used in traditional medicine to increase circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain, to support brain function, and to support heart and lung function. Its bitter phytonutrients are used to support liver and gallbladder function and to stimulate the upper digestive tract to promote proper digestion and improve appetite.

Blessed thistle has antifungal and diuretic properties and has been used traditionally for its emmenagogue properties that treat hormonal disorders that interfere with normal menstruation. Blessed thistle is also considered a galactagogue and has been used to increase and enrich milk flow in nursing mothers. Blessed thistle is also used to remove toxins, acids, and mucus and to assist in intracellular cleansing (inside cells).

Origin: Mediterranean

(Medical caution: women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to consult a health-care professional before use. Persons with allergies to plants of the Asteraceae family (such as feverfew, chamomile, or Echinacea species) should exercise caution with Blessed Thistle as allergic cross-reactivity to Asteraceae plants is common.

Spiritually, it is associated with purification and therefore used in purification baths. It is also believed that wearing a bit of it would protect one from evil. Further, it was associated with the planet Mars, the zodiac sign of Aries, and the element fire.
